| 概要 | Background:
The current study focuses on the first FESPIC Games, held in Oita Prefecture, Japan, in 1975 with participants from Far Eastern and South Pacific countries/areas. This was one of the starting points of the relationship between today’s Paralympic Games and other disabled sports events on the one hand and ISMG on the other. The first games were held as a partial meeting of the ISMG, the forerunner of the Paralympic Games, and led by Dr. Nakamura Yutaka who studied under Dr. Guttmann, ISMG founder. This study examines the influence of the first FESPIC Games on the ISMG using historical material. Content: The first FESPIC Games influenced the ISMG in the following three ways. 1.As travel grants were provided to participants from developing countries, 16 countries/areas joined the first FESPIC Games. Of those, 11 countries/areas participated in an international meeting for the first time; this encouraged these countries/areas to participate in the ISMG after 1976. 2.Participants of the first FESPIC Games had a variety of disabilities: spinal injury, cerebral paralysis, visual impairment, and auditory impairment. The Secretary-General of the Torontolympiad (ISMG 1976) attended the event as an observer; the event aided participation of persons with disabilities other than spinal injury in the Torontolympiad in 1976. 3.After the first FESPIC Games, Dr. Guttmann suggested prioritizing the ISMG over the FESPIC Games at the ISMG meeting, but Japan decided to prioritize support for the second FESPIC Games and not participate in the ISMG 1977. Conclusion: The first FESPIC Games held as a partial meeting of the ISMG served as an opportunity for countries/areas to participate in the ISMG and for those with disabilities other than spinal injury to participate. On the other hand, Dr. Nakamura Yutaka and others focused on developing the FESPIC Games rather than the ISMG. |
